What is spiritual direction?

Spiritual direction is a way of contemplatively companioning others as they seek the transforming work of God in their lives. A spiritual director provides non-judgmental companionship through contemplation, awareness, and prayerful presence. Spiritual direction creates a safe space to help you recognize and appreciate your experience of God’s activity in your life.

Spiritual direction is not new. It actually traces it’s history back to the earliest days of the Christian church and probably earlier. The earliest Christian writings were themselves a way of spiritual direction. As places of worship were organized, there were teachers and guides to provide direction to others. Later, in the 4th and 5th Centuries, the desert fathers and mothers were spiritual guides providing direction to pilgrims who yearned to know how to live a life for God in their daily context.

Spiritual direction is not counseling or coaching, though there are some elements of overlap between these disciplines. Counseling is generally oriented around issues and solutions or problems and ways of managing those problems. Coaching is generally oriented towards the future and steps or a path to achieve a desired outcome. Spiritual direction is about cultivating connection to God and to your truest self.

You might consider spiritual direction if…

I will help you explore various spiritual practices that resonate with your soul and help you feel more connected with God.

05
